This month's lesson

We didn't have our own SEO in order — here's what that taught us

Here's an uncomfortable thing to admit as a marketing agency: until this week, our own website had none of the technical SEO we recommend to clients. No meta description, no Open Graph tags, no structured data, not even verified in Google Search Console.

It's an easy gap to fall into — you're heads-down building for clients, and "our own site" keeps getting pushed to next week. But it's also exactly the kind of gap we'd flag in five minutes on someone else's site.

So this week we fixed it. Concretely: meta description and Open Graph tags (so links look right when shared), schema.org structured data describing who we are and what we do, and verification in both Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools — the two free tools that show what's actually happening in search, instead of guessing.

Three things worth checking on your own site this week (all free, all under 15 minutes each):

  • Does your homepage have a real meta description? View source, search for name="description". If it's missing, Google writes one for you — usually badly.
  • Is your site verified in Google Search Console? If not, you're flying blind on what people actually search to find you.
  • Does your business description read the same everywhere — your site, Google Business Profile, social bios? AI assistants like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overview trust consistency, not a single well-written page.
